Our Roots Since 1572

The story begins in 1572, when an inn for travelers, merchants, and craftsmen was first documented at Schuhstraße 52. Surrounded by half-timbered houses, cobblestone streets, and lively market activity, the building soon became a well-established stopping point for those passing through Celle.

A House Through the Centuries

Much has changed over the centuries — rulers, eras, and ways of traveling — yet this address has always remained a place of hospitality. Generations of guests came here to trade, celebrate, rest, or work, finding a safe and welcoming place in the heart of the vibrant residential city.

The Fire of 1974

On May 20, 1974, the hotel faced one of the most difficult moments in its history: the more than 400-year-old half-timbered building was almost completely destroyed by fire. Five people lost their lives — an event that left a deep mark on the memory of the city and the house itself.

Rebuilding With Respect for History

After the fire, one thing was clear: this house should not disappear. In 1978, the building was rebuilt according to historic plans — preserving its traditional façade while incorporating modern construction — allowing its legacy to continue while offering contemporary comfort.

Today, Hotel Borchers welcomes its guests as a cozy 3-star hotel with 19 bright and comfortable rooms, located in the heart of Celle’s historic Old Town, just a few steps from Celle Castle and St. Mary’s City Church.
